Grapefruit and lime lead here, tart and bright, with a crisp finish that keeps the sweetness from lingering. Athletic builds this one the way it builds beer, from water, malted barley, wheat and hops, then folds in grapefruit and lime flavor, citric acid, and a little agave for balance. There is smoked malt in the grist too, an odd move for a citrus drink and part of why it tastes like more than fruit soda. A 12 ounce can runs 70 calories and 13 grams of carbohydrates, sold in four packs. Serve it very cold, over ice with a lime wedge if you want it closest to the original. It was built with food in mind and holds its own next to ceviche, tacos, or chips and salsa. Salt the rim if that is how you take a paloma.

This one is a bit too intense in its own. I recommend cutting it with seltzer water, adding ice, and a twist of lime. Then it’s very enjoyable.
