Most non-alcoholic tequilas chase the crisp blanco style. This one leans the other way, taking its cues from artisanal mezcal as much as tequila, so smoke sits at the centre of it. Agave arrives earthy first, then smoke and oak build, and black pepper and coriander give the back half some heat. The finish stays warm and a little smoky, which is what keeps it from collapsing into flavoured water once it hits ice. Sobrii makes it in Canada from botanical distillates and extracts, with no artificial flavours or sweeteners and nothing in the way of calories, sugar or carbs. It works best where citrus can meet it, so margaritas and palomas rather than a neat pour. It took silver at the 2022 LA Spirits Awards, plus bronze from both the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the IWSC that same year.
