Clean Cabernet Sauvignon

Taking the alcohol out of a red usually costs you the middle, which is why so many alcohol-free Cabernets read as thin grape juice. This one keeps more than most. Black plum and dark cherry lead, oaky tannins give it grip, and cocoa powder and black pepper turn up on the finish, all of it landing under 0.5% alcohol by volume. It comes from Waterbrook in Walla Walla, Washington, where John Freeman has been lead winemaker since 2005 and the team has racked up more than 160 scores of 90 points or better across the full portfolio. The winery farms a 49-acre estate vineyard and has cut herbicide use by over 90 percent. Pour it with red meat, mushrooms or a long tomato braise, the same food you would open a full-strength Cabernet for, because that is where it makes the most sense.
