Adam Henkell was a Mainz wine merchant who went to France to learn how champagne was made, came back in 1856, and started a Sekt house that now ships to more than seventy countries from its cellars in Wiesbaden. The alcohol free bottling runs on the same foundation. Grapes from established wine regions get made into wine, then gently alcohol reduced. In the glass it is light yellow with green reflections and a lively bead. The nose gives pear, apple and peach with a little vanilla behind it, and the palate stays fruity and fresh with a fine citrus note that hangs around after the sip. It is sealed with a natural cork rather than a crown cap, a small thing that changes how it feels to open in front of people. There is a 200ml bottle if you only want one glass.
