Most alcohol free rum alternatives chase the burn. Laori went the other way and left it out on purpose, reasoning that the sharp part of rum is the part people dislike. Twelve herbs and spices, among them oak wood, vanilla, pineapple and coffee, are steam distilled one at a time using a method borrowed from French perfumery, then blended at a small production site outside Berlin. The result is mild spice over velvety vanilla with real depth behind it, closer to a spiced dark rum than to a syrup. It needs a drink to make sense of it. A dark and stormy with fresh lime is the build Laori points to first. Per 100 mL it runs 26 calories with 5.7 grams of carbohydrate and no sugar, and the bottle sits under 0.2 percent alcohol. Half litre bottle, good for six months unopened.
