GSM is Australian shorthand for the southern Rhone blend. Grenache brings perfume and red fruit, Shiraz brings weight, Mataro brings grip and a savoury edge. Edenvale draws this one from the Fleurieu Peninsula and the Barossa Valley in South Australia. Violet, raspberry pastille and vanilla come through on the nose, with orange zest, charcuterie and sweet spice sitting behind them. The palate is balanced and the finish is dry, which is worth noting in this category since removing alcohol often leaves a wine tasting sweeter than intended. Grape sugar and a thickener help hold the texture together. Alcohol finishes below 0.5 percent. Barbecue is the natural fit, along with rich stews and casseroles, or an antipasto plate of cured meats, olives and roast peppers.
