Tempranillo is Spain's defining red grape, and this Expedition Series bottling pairs it with Cabernet Sauvignon, a common Spanish move that adds structure to Tempranillo's softer fruit. The colour is deep. Cherry and vanilla lead the nose, blackberry bramble and fig follow, and the finish is full and spicy. Grapes come from Spanish regions rather than Australian ones, which is the whole reason the Expedition range exists. Alcohol is removed after fermentation to under 0.5 percent, leaving zero standard drinks and a level comparable to natural fruit juice. Ingredients stay short, being dealcoholised wine, grape juice concentrate and preservatives. Food wise it goes where a Spanish red goes. Tapas, pork, grilled steak and chorizo first, then tomato based dishes like lasagne and pizza, burgers and anything off a barbecue.
